Felt is perfect for beginner sewing because you don’t need to worry about the raw edges. Using this flashcard pattern, you can practice manipulating the fabric as you appliqué the numbers, and then you can learn how to add a grommet to reinforce holes. Sew much fun and such great sewing techniques!
I find that using an open-toe presser foot is incredibly helpful for sewing appliqué because it gives you a clear view of exactly where the needle is hitting the edge of the fabric. To get the cleanest finish, try to time your stitches so the needle drops just off the edge of the appliqué piece and into the background fabric. This “locks” the edge down and prevents fraying, giving your project a clean, durable finish that looks great even after multiple washes.

Use vinyl, and Kate’s free sewing pattern, to make cute snow globe ornaments. They could hang from a backpack or purse, or even a rearview mirror. Customize them and get the hang of sewing with vinyl fabric at the same time.
The biggest challenge with vinyl is that it tends to stick to the bottom of a standard metal presser foot, which can cause uneven stitches or bunching. To solve this, you can use a non-stick or Teflon foot, which glides easily over the surface. If you don’t have one on hand, a simple trick is to place a small piece of clear tape on the bottom of your regular foot or sew with a piece of tissue paper between the foot and the vinyl. Once you are finished, the paper simply tears away, leaving behind perfectly smooth seams.
